Barrel Pumps - Manual, Electric & Pneumatic

ConveyPro Systems · Industrial Pumps

Electric barrel pumps for drum transfer

Drum and barrel transfer pumps in SS, PP or PVDF, operated by hand, electric motor or compressed air, for emptying drums of chemicals, oils and solvents.

Also known as: Drum pump, Barrel transfer pump, Drum transfer pump, Pneumatic drum pump, Hand barrel pump

A barrel pump has a long tube that dips into a drum and a drive unit on top. Choose the drive by what you have: a hand pump needs nothing, an electric pump needs a power point, a pneumatic pump needs compressed air. The wetted tube is the part that touches the liquid, so the material (SS, PP or PVDF) is chosen by the liquid.

The hand pump gives about 350 ml per turn, which is enough for small volumes. Electric and air-motor types give about 100 LPM. The simple pneumatic type needs less air pressure and suits closed barrels. The air-operated piston type gives a higher head with finer control.

It is the wrong answer for continuous transfer from a tank or for long pipe runs, which need a centrifugal or AODD pump. The electric type is rated for a short duty cycle, so it is not for continuous running.

Which drive

DriveTypical flowUse when
Rotary hand pumpAbout 350 ml per turn; head about 6 mOccasional, small volumes; no power or air
ElectricAbout 100 LPM, head about 22 mA power point is available; flameproof motor option
Pneumatic (air motor)About 100 LPM, head about 22 mCompressed air at about 6 - 8 kg/cm2; no electrics in the area
Simple pneumaticAbout 80 LPM, head about 10 mClosed barrel; lower air pressure
Air piston typeAbout 50 LPM, head about 25 mHigher head and finer control

Typical catalogue figures. Real flow falls with viscosity and head.

Material and liquid

  • SS-316 or SS-304 for solvents, oils and many mild chemicals.
  • PP or PVDF for acids, alkalis and aggressive chemicals; check temperature limits.
  • Viscous liquids slow the flow sharply; tell us the viscosity.

Duty cycle

The electric type is designed for short bursts. We recommend limiting a run to about 3 minutes before resting the motor. For continuous duty, use an air-driven pump instead.

What to send us for a quote

Pumps are chosen by the liquid first and the duty second. Give us as much of this as you can.

  • Name of the liquid and its concentration
  • Temperature of the liquid
  • Viscosity, and the size and amount of any solids
  • Flow you need and the height or pressure it must work against
  • Where the pump sits relative to the liquid (flooded, or suction lift)
  • Power or compressed air you have available
  • Whether the area is hazardous (flammable or explosive atmosphere)
  • Drum size and whether it is open or closed

Frequently asked questions

A pump that stands in a drum and transfers the liquid out, driven by hand, electric motor or compressed air.

Hand if you pump small volumes now and then; electric if you have power; pneumatic if you have air or need no electrics near the liquid.

Roughly 30 to 100 LPM depending on type and liquid.

The electric type is offered with a flameproof (FLP) or a standard (non-FLP) motor. Tell us your area so we can confirm what suits.

The electric type is rated for a short duty cycle of about 3 minutes. For long runs use an air-driven or centrifugal pump.

Slowly. Flow falls with viscosity. Send us the liquid and its viscosity.

PP or PVDF, depending on the acid, its concentration and temperature.
